She and her late sister, Francois, were raised in San Antonio by their mother, Ruby Cupp. As an adult, Lois met her future husband, Brownie Brownlee, while he was stationed at Camp Hood (now Ft. Hood) in Killeen, Texas.
When Brownie shipped off to join Patton’s Tank Destroyers, the couple kept in touch with a stream of love letters – many of which survive to this day. After fulfilling his service, Brownie returned to Texas, proposed to Lois, and they were married in the town of Temple.
Eventually, they headed west to find their fortunes in California. But along the way, they made a detour to visit Lois’ sister, here in Lubbock. And it was here they stayed.
Their first daughter, Cheri, was born here in 1946, followed by their second daughter, Robyn, in 1951.
In 1959, Brownie entered the Real Estate business, eventually rising to the position of Executive Officer for the Lubbock Association of Realtors. There, he spent more than two decades representing the needs of the city’s Real Estate community, traveling throughout the state and across the nation, with Lois, his constant companion.
In 1964, the Family Service Association nominated the family “Family of the Year”. And as founding members of Grace Presbyterian Church, the couple worked tirelessly to support its mission of faith and fellowship – work that continued throughout their earthly days.
As season ticket holders, they were ardent supporters of Texas Tech, as well as various Performing Arts endeavors. And as those who know her will attest, Lois’ love of Family, Church, Food, Hats & Shopping, Mariachis & Margaritas continued to the end.
She is survived by daughters Robyn Hurd and Cheri Brownlee, Cheri’s husband Bill Barlow, grandchildren Broc Poston and Jennifer Brennan and Jennifer’s husband Patrick Brennan, as well as great grandchildren Liam Brownlee Brennan, Sawyer Camden Brennan and Parker James Brennan. And beloved dog, Chiwee.
The memorial worship service to celebrate and thank God for this brilliant life will be held at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, May 3rd at Grace Presbyterian Church of Lubbock with her friend and minister, the Reverend Scott Campbell. Memorial contributions in tribute to Lois may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, 4820 19th Street, Lubbock, Texas, 79407.
