Margaret Louise Johnson, age 92, peacefully entered eternal rest on February 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion that touched countless lives. Born on September 27, 1932, in Honey Grove, Texas, to Harry G. Johns and Bertha Louise Whaley Johns. Margaret grew up in Lamar County, where she first discovered her calling to serve others.
At the tender age of twelve, Margaret began her lifelong journey with Christ, accepting Him as her Savior and Lord. Her deep faith led her through various church communities, from the Church of Christ in Arthur City, Texas, to New Galilee Baptist Church (later Pilgrim Baptist Church) in Lubbock, and finally to Remnant Faith Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In each congregation, Margaret's dedication to service shone brightly through her roles as a children's Sunday School teacher, Women's class secretary, and leader of the Sunshine Ministry.
Margaret's life was a testament to the power of love and perseverance. In the late 1940s, she married Cleveland Hollis, welcoming three beloved children into the world. After relocating to Lubbock in the mid-1950s, she found love again, married Freeman Johnson, and together they were blessed with nine more children.
Her professional life reflected her nurturing spirit, working at the Lubbock State School until her retirement in the early 1990s. Margaret's caring heart led her to continue serving others as a school cook, nurse's aide, and caregiver for senior citizens. Perhaps her most remarkable achievement was opening her heart and home to over 200 foster children, earning her the affectionate title "GranGran" from her first grandchild – a name that perfectly captured her boundless capacity for love.
Margaret's legacy lives on through her loving children: Charles (Ester) Hollis, Eloise (Charles) Bonner, Noah James Johnson, InEyes OfGod Johnson, Stay Ready Johnson, Constance Rena (LD) Quinton, Johnny Lee (Jeanne) Johnson, and Betty Gayle (Dwain) Morgan. Her family tree flourished with 25 grandchildren, more than 40 greatgrandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren, not to mention the hundreds of foster children whose lives she touched.
She joins in heaven her beloved husband Freeman Johnson, son Brucey Johnson, and daughters Rosemary Johnson, Margaret Nancy Mae Johnson, and Wanda Faye Hollis Cutliff.
Margaret was the embodiment of love itself – a beacon of hope, compassion, and unwavering faith who transformed every life she touched. Her warm smile, gentle spirit, and servant's heart will forever remain in the memories of all who knew her, reminding us that one person's love can indeed change the world.
