Mary Ellen (Sharp) Cowan went home to be with the Lord on December 14, 2020 at approximately 10:00 pm in her sleep. She was diagnosed with cancer on December 15, 2013 and fought for seven years, leading to her passing due to breathing problems. She was born September 5, 1942 in Idabel, Oklahoma and was 78 years old. Her main hope when diagnosed was to spend Christmas with her family that year, which she did, and every Christmas since except this one. She almost made it. Her family was the most important thing in her life except the Lord.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday December 30, 2020 in Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel. Family will receive guests one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Livestream will be available on Resthaven’s Facebook.
Her father and mother, Hardy and Mettie Sharp, have both passed. She was the youngest of seven children, all had passed except for her. She has gone now to live in Heaven with the Lord. At an early age she and her family moved to Sundown and later to Levelland where she met her loving husband, Loyd Cowan.
She attended South Plains College in Levelland for a while. She was a part time substitute teacher in the Littlefield School District.
December 15 was an important day in her life. We were married on December 15, 1957. She was diagnosed with cancer on December 15, 2013. She passed away on December 14, 2020. She always said she thought the Lord had a purpose for her to be here. Maybe she fulfilled her purpose in life. We hope so.
She loved to go camping and fishing. She always looked forward to July when she and her family would go to Fun Valley, Colorado with campers to have lots of fun. They would catch fish, have a big fish fry, and bring a lot of fish home. She loved to sit under a tree with family members and around the camp fire at night.
She was baptized on August 28, 1985 at Hurlwood Baptist Church in Lubbock by Reverend Darrell Strickland and later attended Redwood Baptist Church.
Mary is survived by her husband, Loyd Cowan of 64 years; 4 children and their families: Toney and Sandra Cowan of Levelland, Janice Gage and Mike Knotts of Lubbock, Betty Perkins and Jim Stewart of Lubbock, and Gayla Kinney of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; Mary had 10 grandchildren: Amanda and her husband Collin, Ashley and her husband Derek, James and his wife Lori, Jessica, Jenny, Shelby, Rebecca and her husband Beau, Justin, Charley, and Katy; and 10 great grandchildren.
They owned and operated Executive Mobile Home Village. Mary did all the bookwork. You might drive through and see Mary on top of a house, trimming trees, repairing a roof, mowing yards, working in her garden, or maybe repairing a fence. You would always see her driving the golf cart. She loved sitting on the back porch visiting, cooking or just relaxing. She loved her fish and squirrels. She also loved doing arts and crafts and painting pictures.
Mary has been square and round dancing for the last 34 years. She danced all over the State of Texas. She and Loyd received the Lee Roy Award in 2004, which is awarded once a year to a couple or single.
They held many offices in the TSFS&R Dancers, LASRDF and Levi & Laces Club.
We wish you would join us for a reception following the funeral service at the Lubbock Area Square and Round Dance Federation Building located at 2305 120th Street, Lubbock, Texas. Go out South University to 120th Street, you will see the Lubbock Area Square and Round Dance Federation sign on the corner of 120th and University. Turn east go one block and you are there.
