Max attained the rank of Eagle Scout before graduating from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and spending two years in the U.S. Army. After teaching in Kansas and Oklahoma, he joined Lubbock Public Schools in 1962 where he taught math for three years at Matthews Junior High. Max married fellow-teacher Barbara Bruner in Lubbock on May 29, 1965. He then taught honors math, industrial arts and coached at Hutchinson Junior High while also sponsoring students in the state-wide Math Counts competition until retirement.
Max worshipped at Bacon Heights Baptist Church, enjoyed spending time outdoors with family and friends, and shared his love of woodworking with sons and grandson. He also offered his support to Lubbock Meals on Wheels and Parkridge Medical Clinic of Lubbock.
Max was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Alvin Granger. Those left to honor his memory include wife Barbara; sons Mike Beberniss and wife Donna and Matt Beberniss; his beloved grandchildren Conrad and Melanie; sister Estalee Granger; nephews, Mark, Eric and Brian Granger; cousin, Bob Wyett and wife JoAnn and their children: Steve, Kathi and Paul; long-time friends Mickey Andress and wife Orwinelle and their children, Mike, Melanie and Mark.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 4, 2018 at Resthaven Funeral Home.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Resthaven Memorial Park officiated by Don Baldwin, youth minister at Bacon Heights Baptist Church.
