Graveside service: 10 a.m. Thursday in Resthaven Memorial Park with memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in the chapel. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Funeral Home, Lubbock.
Mark was the third and youngest child of Glen and Edna Howitt and attended Empire Rural School for eight years. After graduating from King City High School in 1943, he served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
After his army service, Max attended the University of Missouri and graduated in 1949 with a degree in agriculture economics. He taught Institutional on The Farm Training to veterans for one year at Clarence, Mo. While in Clarence, Max met Evelyn Schwada and they were married June 25, 1950, in Macon, Mo. He attended graduate school at the University of Illinois for one year before going to work for DeKalb Seed Company in 1951. Through his work at DeKalb, the family lived in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, and twice in Lubbock. He retired after 40 years with DeKalb as regional manager for several corn and sorghum plants and numerous international projects.
Max's life centered around work, his wife and his family. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing golf and bridge. He was a member of Lubbock's First United Methodist Church and the Homebuilders Sunday School Class.
Max's wife, Evelyn; his mother and father; one brother; and one sister preceded him in death.
Survivors: Children, Beverly Young of Grand Prairie (husband, George), Cynthia Petrick of Irving (husband, Terry), Sandy Hestes of Arlington (husband, Bob), and Greg Howitt of San Antonio (wife, Patricia); grandchildren, Dr. Carmen Petrick Smith (husband, Steve), Lauren Petrick Brooks (husband, Jordan), Jeffrey Howitt Young, Bryan Howitt and Alan Howitt.
