Steven Ray Brown of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. His family will host a time of fellowship and remembrance honoring his 72 years of life from 6:00–8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, at Lakeridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, also at Lakeridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, followed by a graveside service at Resthaven Memorial Park at 2:30 p.m.
Steve was born on August 19, 1953, to E. Jack and Frances Brown in Lubbock, Texas. He truly loved calling Lubbock home. He attended Maedgen Elementary, J. T. Hutchinson Junior High, and Monterey High School, and went on to graduate from Texas Tech University in 1975 with a degree in Mass Communications. Most of his career was spent at Lubbock Power and Light, where he served the city for 30 years before retiring in 2010. After retirement, he joyfully served New Home Baptist Church as the worship leader for 12 years, stepping down only for health reasons.
He met the love of his life, Cheryl Gay Wilkins, in 1986 at First Baptist Church in Lubbock. Their romance began on a choir trip to Paris, France, where they shared their first date visiting the Eiffel Tower in the City of Love. They were married six years later, on April 25, 1992. In 1999, God blessed them with their daughter, Hallie Marie Brown.
Steve loved his family, baseball, football, singing, traveling, and above all, God. He cherished his trips to Israel, Germany, Europe, Alaska, Austria, and many other incredible places. During his travels, he achieved his lifelong goal of seeing every major league baseball team play on their home field. A devoted sports fan, he was especially proud that over 50 years, he attended all but one Texas Tech home football game. His love for music grew into a lifelong ministry, expressed through his years with the Lubbock Chorale, his faithful service in multiple church choirs and Bible studies, and his dedication to New Home Baptist Church. He also served in leadership roles with Community Bible Study and Bible Study Fellowship, where he led worship and taught men’s Bible study.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Brown; his daughter, Hallie Brown; his sister Jacque Brazell (Ricky); and his sister Sandy Lynch (Jay), all of Lubbock. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, including Carrie Larsh (Chad) of Tyler; Casey Brown (Larry) of Lubbock; Jacquelynn Brazell of Lubbock; and Preston Lynch of Midland; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Jack and Frances Brown, and his niece, Christie Gutierrez.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Steve’s medical teams at UMC, Covenant, H & H Medical, and MD Anderson, who supported him throughout this long and difficult journey. They also wish to thank the nurses and chaplain at UMC Hospice for being an immense comfort during Steve’s final days.
