Vernon Lee Miller, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on the morning of November 29th at 88 years old. Surrounded by love, he leaves behind a legacy defined by devotion, service, and quiet strength.
Born on December 11, 1936, in Pleasant Hill, Illinois, Vern was the son of John and Pearl Miller. He grew up in Pleasant Hill, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and loyalty—qualities that guided him throughout his life. During these early years, he was baptized by his Pentecostal grandfather, Benjamin McKinnon, in the local Six Mile Creek. On August 23, 1953, he married Sheila, beginning a remarkable 72-year marriage that inspired all who knew them. Together, they had three sons: Stanley, Jeffrey, and David.
Vern proudly served in the United States Army, with assignments in Okinawa, Germany, and Vietnam. Throughout his military career, he led with honor and integrity, ultimately retiring as a Major. After his service, he and Sheila settled in El Paso, Texas, where he pursued a successful career in the financial industry, continuing to exemplify diligence, professionalism, and care for those around him.
Following retirement, Vern embraced a new chapter—traveling full time in his RV with Sheila. Together, they explored the world, creating unforgettable memories, deepening their bond, and living out the adventures of which they had always dreamed.
To his family, he was simply “Papa”—a steady, loving presence who made every moment feel meaningful. He cherished golfing and watching sports, especially cheering on his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. Many of the family’s most treasured memories were spent watching Cardinals games with him and sharing in his joy.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Miller; his son Stanley; his brother Ed; his in-laws Fred and Margaret Hawkins; and brother-in-law David Borrowman.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Miller; sons Jeffrey Miller and wife Kathy, and David Miller and wife Sandy; daughter-in-law Tijuana Miller, wife of his late son Stanley; grandchildren Trevor Miller and wife Kelsey, Kristin Gainer, and Carson Miller; sister Debbie Borrowman; his Aunt Eva Sheppard; and several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren who will continue to cherish his memory.
A memorial honoring Vern will be held on January 5th, allowing friends and family to have ample time to travel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to Lakeridge Global Methodist Church in Lubbock: 4701 82nd Street, Lubbock TX, 79424 (806) 794-4015 or The Salvation Army.
