He served his county in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. Wade married Kathleen Brunson on June 8, 1954. He earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at Texas Tech and his EdD at Indiana University and retired from Texas Tech in 1995. Wade was a member of the Lubbock Lions Club and Highland Baptist Church. He enjoyed being with his family but most of all he loved the Lord.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; daughter Ann Hagstrom; son, Col. Jeff Thompson and his wife Lezli; daughter-in-law, Terri Thompson;12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Aline Starry, Ruth Irwin, Tawanna Hindman and LaVonne Meacham. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Steven.
