Born in Chatham on June 20, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Russell Lee Craddock and Elizabeth Cocke Craddock. In addition to her parents, her husband, Fred Crews McDowell and one son, Hughla James McDowell preceded her in death.
Anna's life was marked by a profound commitment to caring for others. Her journey began with a pursuit of knowledge and excellence, culminating in her graduation from the MCV School of Nursing in 1957 and the attainment of a BS degree in nursing. Her tireless dedication and passion for her craft were evident throughout her career, which she concluded after years of service at the Lynchburg Health Department.
Anna's life was a testament to her selflessness and devotion, extending beyond her professional endeavors. Her unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her life, as she found solace and community at Keystone Baptist Church, where she was an esteemed member.
She is survived by her son, Russell Crews McDowell; two granddaughters, Bryn Woods and Abby McDowell; her brother, Russell W. Craddock (Gwen) and her sister, Merle C. Mead.
She will be fondly remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support of those around her. Anna leaves behind cherished memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched through her work and presence.
A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 1, 2023 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 30, 2013 at the funeral home.
