
David Richard Smiley, 69, of Lynchburg, died, Monday, May 27, 2013, at his residence. He was the husband of Anne Overstreet Smiley. Born October 12, 1943, in Bristol, VA, he was the son of the late Norvell Prentis Smiley, Sr. and the late Mary Susan Bray Smiley.
David was a retired manager of Kramer Goodyear in Norfolk, VA and he was of the Methodist faith. David was a graduate of EC Glass High School and of Lynchburg College, where he earned his BA degree in History. He was an avid fan of college sports as well as a great bridge player. David was also a past Master of the Eubank Masonic Lodge 262 here in Lynchburg, VA. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. David also loved history, which makes it appropriate to mention that David was born on Columbus Day and passed away on Memorial Day.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother N. Prentis Smiley, Jr. and a loving pet, Rascal.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by four children, Jeffrey R. Smiley (Kathy) of Bluefield, WV, Arthur B. Dodd, III of Lynchburg, Michael O. Dodd (Jackie) of El Dorado, AR and Deborah D. Diffenbaugh (Jon) of Greenville, NC; six grandchildren, Tony Diffenbaugh (Megan), Gretchen Diffenbaugh, Ethan Diffenbaugh, Delaney Dodd, Gabrielle Cuzzilla and Steven Cuzzilla; a loving pet, Ginger; and other loving family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted, 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
There will be no scheduled visitation hours at the funeral home, but the family will receive friends at the residence of Anne Overstreet Smiley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
