Born June 22, 1921 in Lynchburg on Wadsworth Street, Polly grew up overlooking Fort Ave. in the big red brick house on the hill beside the old hosiery mill. She was a 1938 graduate of E C Glass High School and a retired bookkeeper from F L Showalter, Inc. She loved to dance at places like the old Merry Garden, and she especially enjoyed dancing in a bright red dress at the Holly Ball at Christmas in Bedford.
She also loved to sing and was a vocalist with The Vagabonds and The Stardusters dance bands during the mid-1940’s to the early 1960’s. Mrs. Vaughn was an avid Virginia Tech fan and had literally taped the tuning dial on her radio to the Tech Network. She loved her Hokies and had her Virginia Tech blanket with her at the very end.
She is preceded in death by her father, Graham Wilson Liggan; her stepfather, Henry Thomas Hicks; her mother, Nannie Miles Hicks, and a dear friend she considered a sister, Mrs. Helen Murphy.
She is survived by her son, Danny Vaughn and his wife, Patty of Hopewell. The family is grateful to the special caregivers that enriched her life in her later years.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Whitten Park Avenue Chapel by the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton. A visitation and viewing will follow the service. Interment will take place at Fort Hill Memorial Park at a later date.
