

James William Yates, 93, of Lynchburg, died, Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at The Summit. He was the husband of the late Marie Crouch Yates. Born December 22, 1917, in Cool Springs, NC, he was the son of the late Theopolis Columbus Yates and the late Dora Drye Yates.
Mr. Yates was a retired radio technician for GE and a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, where he was on the Board of Trustees for many years. He also served our country in the US Navy during World War II. Mr. Yates was also an auxiliary member of Lynchburg General Hospital for 20 years and a life time member of the Military Affiliates Radio System. He also was a member and treasurer for the Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Yates is preceded in death by one brother, Robert C. Yates.
Mr. Yates is survived by one daughter, Sharon Williamson and her husband Bob of Forest; two granddaughters, Lisa Dargay and her husband Jeff of Powell, OH and Anne Kopp and her husband Josh of Eagle River, AK; and four great-grandchildren, Kayla Dargay, Luke Dargay, Riley Kopp and Teagan Kopp.
A funeral service will be conducted, 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Becky J. Cloud officiating. Entombment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum, where the American Legion Post 16 will present military honors.
The family will receive friends, 3-5 p.m., Sunday, July 3, 2011, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
