Obituary of Lawrence "Larry" Neal McKinney
Lawrence “Larry” Neal McKinney, age 97, of Goode, husband of Loretta E. McKinney, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. Larry was born on August 1, 1920, in Bedford County, to the late Lewis and Bertha McKinney. His son, Robert L. McKinney also preceded him in death. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by three stepchildren, Heidi Overfelt and husband, Michael, David Bayne, and Marie Crispen and husband, Reese; a brother, Lewis McKinney; two grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Larry proudly served his country first in the United States Army during World War I as part of the 81st Division Signal Corp. He took part in the invasion of Peleliu in the the Phillipines and then was later stationed in Aomori as part of the occupation of Japan. He later served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on a supply ship. He was a member of Bedford Lutheran Church, a lifetime Deacon of Rivermont Baptist Church in Lynchburg, the American Legion, and was Past Master of Forest Lodge No. 245. He volunteered for over 20 years at the Bedford Courthouse as a member of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department Triad Program. He was also very proud of his Worked All States certification and Volunteer Examiner for the National Association of Amateur Radio. He was an active Ham radio operator having the call letters WA4FRH. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials in Larry’s honor be made to Bedford Lutheran Church, 728 Burks Hill Rd, Bedford, VA 24523. A service of remembrance will be held at Bedford Lutheran Church (which meets at the Bower Art Center, 305 N Bridge St, Bedford, VA 24523) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2017, with Pastor Floyd Addison officiating.
