

Dr. Maxwell C. Feinman died on February 12, 2026. Born in the Virginia Baptist Hospital on June 25, 1928, Max was the son of Joseph N. Feinman and Deborah Weinstein Feinman, both of whom predeceased him. He is also preceded in death by his older brothers, Gilbert T. Feinman and his wife Virginia, and Edward R. Feinman and his wife Maxine.
Max was proud of growing up in the Fort Hill-Westover section of Lynchburg where he made many lifelong friends. He was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools beginning at the Fort Hill School, Thomas C. Miller School, Robert E. Lee Junior High School, with graduation from E.C. Glass High School in 1945. Max was a member and manager of Coach Vince Bradford’s first Glass football team and was the manager of Coach Jimmy Brian’s first Glass basketball team.
Max graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in the class of 1949-B, of which he was immensely proud and remained in a relationship with his Brother Rats until his death. In preparation for medical school, he attended Virginia Tech for two quarters in 1950 at the Graduate School of Biology. He graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in the class of 1954 and served for many years as Class Agent, thereby maintaining many relationships with his medical school classmates. After medical school, Max undertook a medical internship at UVA for one year and then went into the United States Air Force as a Captain in the Medical Corps, stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, SC. He was Honorably Discharged from the Air Force in 1957. Max then returned to the University of Virginia Medical School for a three-year residency in Otolaryngology, the practice of Ear, Nose, and Throat medicine.
In 1953 Max married Arlene (Bunny) Spandorfer from Norfolk, Virginia. Bunny was the love of his life and they were married for fifty-four years until her death in 2007. He is survived by their four children Steven Allen Feinman, James Ben Feinman (Laurel), Terri Sue O’Hara (Mark), and Robert M. Feinman, as well as five grandchildren, Holly Maxwell O’Hara, Benjamin Peace Feinman, Peter Nathaniel Feinman, Hallie Jane Feinman, and Maxwell Summitt Feinman, and his former daughter-in-law, Deborah Barr Feinman. Max and his family were lifelong members of the Agudath Shalom Congregation.
Dr. Feinman opened a solo practice in Ear, Nose, and Throat Medicine in 1960 in the Allied Arts Building in Downtown Lynchburg. The practice later became Blue Ridge Ear, Nose, and Throat. Max was Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1962. He was also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was admitted to practice in all hospitals in Central Virginia where he served on various staff committees over the years. He practiced medicine in Lynchburg for 40 years.
Max was a lifelong sports fan of all VMI and University of Virginia teams, the Washington Redskins/Commanders, and the New York Yankees. Max loved fishing at College Lake as a child and as a teenager at Timberlake.
Max expresses his final appreciation and gratitude to his family, his professional colleagues and associates, his patients, and his many friends for a long and happy life. He expresses special appreciation and gratitude to his faithful caregiver, Phyllis Slaughter. Phyllis promised Bunny before she died in 2007 that she would stay with Dr. Feinman for as long as he wanted to live in his house and Phyllis honored her word as a loyal friend.
A funeral service will be held at Agudath Shalom Synagogue, 2055 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, on Sunday, February 22, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. with a graveside ceremony thereafter. Max’s family will be at Max’s home at 4405 Williams Road after the graveside service and all family and friends are invited.
The pallbearers will be the great-grandchildren of Joe and Debbie Feinman: Holly O’Hara, Ben Feinman, Peter Feinman, Hallie Feinman, and Max Feinman, the grandchildren of Max and Bunny Feinman; Stuart Johnson, Neely Johnson, Melissa Feinman, and Joe Feinman, the grandchildren of Gilbert and Virginia Feinman; and Evan Feinman, Justin Feinman, Emma Feinman, and Matt Feinman, the grandchildren of Edward and Maxine Feinman.
