Born on November 1, 1944, in Big Spring, Texas, Darryl was a son of the late Buel Franklin Fulfer and Evelyn Jane Funderburk Fulfer. Darryl grew up in Oak Cliff, Texas, and graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1963.
Darryl married Beverly Crow on August 8, 1966. Having received a draft notice, Darryl enlisted in the Air Force a few days later. He completed basic training and technical school and was assigned to Dyess AFB in Abilene where he maintained, inspected, and repaired B52 airplanes. One of his duties on the Strategic Air Command base was to maintain alert force B52s ready for the war in Vietnam. He received the rank of Sergeant and received an honorable discharge in 1970.
Darryl worked as an auto mechanic at various locations and frequently worked on cars in service of family, friends, and fellow church members. Darryl started working for Lone Star Gas Company as a utility technician in 1979. He worked there for 27 years and retired in 2006. After retirement he took care of his farm and cattle.
At a young age Darryl knew the Lord and was a man of faith. Darryl was a member of First Baptist Church in Mabank where he attended for 25 years and served as a deacon. Darryl’s life was an ongoing project list of service to others. He was known for repairing almost anything that was broken, completing building projects, giving a ride to church, and offering sound advice. He volunteered on numerous mission trips to the Rio Grande Valley to help with church building projects and repairs.
He enjoyed collecting guns, playing chess, watching westerns, and researching and adding to his knowledge of old music of all genres.
Darryl and Beverly were married for 58 years. Along with his wife, he is survived by his brother, Gary (wife Sharon) and sister, Karen; his son, Barry (wife Brandee) and daughter, Gail (husband Brian) and his grandchildren Aubrey, Ethan (wife Kate), Elliott, and Hollee; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank. A celebration of Darryl’s life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Mabank. Interment will follow the service at Elm Grove Cemetery.
