Donnie grew up in the China Grove Community and graduated from Martins Mills High School where he played basketball. It was at a basketball game where Donnie met Sheila, who would become his wife of 64 years. Donnie first worked in construction, helping to excavate the land that would become Lake Ray Hubbard. Later he and Sheila opened a western store called Rowan’s Western Wear that they owned for nearly 40 years, which became a staple in the community. Over the years, Rowan’s became a place that allowed them to meet so many dear friends. In addition to business, Donnie enjoyed riding and training cutting horses and watching the Rangers and Cowboys.
At the age of 64, Donnie received Christ and began attending First Baptist Church of Gray’s Prairie where he was baptized. After this he regularly attended church and Sunday School.
