Born on March 10, 1954, in Rockford to Carl and Norma Turman, Cheryl spent her life rooted in the community she loved. She retired from the City of Rockford in 2019, where she took pride in her work and the people she served.
Cheryl’s greatest joy in life was being a mother to her son, Brett Shelton. She was devoted, nurturing, and endlessly proud of him — being his mother was truly the role she cherished most. She also deeply loved her family and was always ready to lend a hand or a kind word.
She had a lifelong love of reading, writing poetry, and listening to music. Her gentle spirit, sense of humor, and generous heart touched everyone who knew her.
Cheryl is survived by her son, Brett Shelton; her siblings, Gary Turman, Dale Turman, and Gayle (Mike) Winterland; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear friend and Brett’s father, Fred Shelton.
She will be remembered for her warmth, intelligence, and the deep love and kindness she gave to those around her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Rockford, IL, in Cheryl’s memory. She had a deep love for animals, and supporting their care would be a meaningful way to honor her life.
