

Maggie Lula. Garrett, age 99, of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2024. She was born on August 10, 1924, to Nannie and Henry Caldwell in Athens, Alabama. Maggie met and married the love of her life, Harold Garrett, with whom she spent 56 joyful years. She was a Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church member in Athens, Alabama. She was a devoted missionary who gave back to her community in every way possible. Even when she could no longer do physical work, the members of her church honored her for the care and love she had given to all who needed her. She was known for her extensive leadership abilities, spending much of her time working for the NAACP and serving on the Board of Directors (among various other positions) at Central Terrace Co-Op. She was an excellent cook in her private life, known for her soul food and being a fantastic pound cake baker. She was a beloved second mom to many and will be significantly missed by all those whose lives she touched. May her memory be a comfort to all who knew and loved her.
Maggie is survived by her daughters, Tamera Foley, and Shawnn Garrett; granddaughters, Nicole Foley and Jessica (Matt) Magdziarz; great-granddaughters Lucy and Remy Magdziarz; and Bonus daughter, Johnella McIntoush-Martin. Bonus granddaughters Terri Tina and Tracy McIntoush. Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Garrett; daughter, Patty Garrett; parents, Nannie and Henry Caldwell; brothers, John Henry Caldwell, George Caldwell, Bruce Caldwell, Willie Caldwell, Robert Caldwell Sr., Ezell Caldwell, and Mozell Caldwell; and sisters Sally McWilliams and Annie Mae Sowell and a host of nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Maggie will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life at noon at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 North Alpine Road, Machesney Park, Illinois 61115.
