Margaret Mary Washington, 80, passed away on Saturday, January 3rd, 2026 in Rockford, Illinois. She was born in Webster City, Iowa to Reo and Frieda (Schroer) Ball on January 10, 1945. She married the love of her life, John Washington, on May 2, 1964 in Duncombe, Iowa. A visitation will be held Saturday, January 10th, 2026, from 9-11am at Saint Bridget’s Catholic Church with mass service directly
following.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Margaret is survived by her children: Michael (Dorey) Washington of Loves Park, IL, Michele Thomas of Vincennes, IN, Marc (Michelle) Washington of Machesney Park, IL, Morey (Ann) Washington of Rockford, IL, and Mary Jo (Dawn) Hittington of Machesney Park, IL. Her children blessed her with 21 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson. She is also survived by her brothers Jerry (Jean) Ball of Glidden, IA, Father Richard Ball of Mapleton, IA, her sisters Lorraine (Curt) McCoskey of Webster City, IA, Cathy Wheeler of Loves Park, IL, and many nieces and nephews. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her 2 sisters, Donna Hanzelman and Marilyn Daniels, her brother, Earl Ball, and her grandson, Christopher Thomas.
Margaret spent her life in the service of others. She worked at Rockford School District, where she enjoyed being a part of the life skills community and helping children with different needs thrive to the best of their ability. She was active at St. Bridget's Catholic Church where she and John were involved in starting a youth group. She helped minister to home bound parishioners. Margaret helped
clean the church, participated in a weekly prayer group, and was involved in the Ladie's Guild. She was also proud to be a Lady of the Knights of Columbus, as she stood beside her husband.
Margaret enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, playing cards as often as possible, but above all, she truly enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren, especially cheering them on with their athletic teams and baking cookies. If she wasn’t found at these places, she could be found in her chair watching old westerns, The Rifleman, game shows, or horror movies like Jaws. She will be missed always until she is reunited with her family once more.
