Alan Harrison Rumph passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 21, 2016, surrounded by family. A memorial service will be held at Pierce Chapel at Wesleyan College at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2016. The Reverend Keithen Tucker will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service.
The son of the late David McKenzie Rumph and Myra Knupp Rumph, Alan was born and raised in Montezuma, Georgia. He received a degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was Phi Beta Kappa and earned the Sells Award and the highest score in the state on the CPA examination. Alan received his law degree from the University of Virginia, where he was Order of the Coif (legal honor society) and Senior Executive Editor of the Virginia Tax Review.
After law school, Alan was Attorney-Advisor to the Honorable Mary Ann Cohen of the United States Tax Court, and practiced tax law with Ivins, Phillips & Barker in Washington, D.C.
He moved back to Georgia to be closer to family and practiced law with the Macon firm of Smith Hawkins Hollingsworth & Reeves for many years. In 2013, he joined the Atlanta office of Baker Donelson law firm. He was a nationally recognized specialist in federal healthcare regulatory law.
Alan loved great Burgundy wine, good food, his dogs, his wife, and his children (not necessarily in that order of preference). Besides having an insatiable intellectual curiosity, Alan was passionate about hiking, gardening, and all kinds of music. He was a terrific conversationalist who never met a stranger. Quite simply, he loved life.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl Rumph; his children, Leslie Rumph of Atlanta and Sam Rumph of Brunswick; his brother, David McKenzie Rumph, Jr., and wife, Patty, of Montezuma; and five nieces and nephews including Sally Rumph Haugabook (Steven) of Athens, David M. Rumph III (Brady) of Columbus, Jim Rumph (Sarah) of Atlanta; and Christopher Long and Katelyn Long, both of Falls Church, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alan's honor to the American Cancer Society - Central Georgia, 804 Cherry St., Macon, GA 31201, or Central Georgia C.A.R.E.S., 520 Professional Drive, Suite 2, Macon, GA 31201, www.acpup.org.
