Bert was born in Decatur, Georgia, the first of two sons born to the late Spencer Jacobs and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Jacobs. He graduated from Decatur Boys High School in 1949. After graduation, he and three of his friends headed down the Ocmulgee River in canoes from Macon to Darien on a once-in-a-lifetime trip that lasted several weeks. As he has told the story, on that trip whenever they were approaching bridges, they would simply roll out of their canoes into the water and hold on to keep anyone on the bridge from finding out that they had all-over tans. Sleeping on sand bars and fighting snakes and gators, they emerged victorious at Darien. He was a strong swimmer and enjoyed sharing this skill. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1954, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering, Bert entered the US Air Force as a second lieutenant maintenance officer with duty assignments in Louisiana and Goose Bay, Labrador during the Korean War. After completing his tour of duty he moved to Georgetown, SC where he was hired as a plant engineer by International Paper Company. He met a nurse there named Libby Norris, who he later married. Together they bought a place on Pawley’s Island and named it “Slipshod”. In 1959, Bert and Libby sold that property and moved to Macon when Bert took a new job with Armstrong. At that time they joined Vineville Methodist Church. Later they bought a house on Ridge Avenue where they finished raising their four children. Just like “Slipshod”, this place got a name too, “Round Rock”, because of all the round rocks found on the property. Bert retired from Robins Air Force Base where he had worked in several different engineering positions including machine tools, bomb racks and support equipment . He was a former member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer serving on the Church Council and as Stewardship Chairman and a current member of Riverside Methodist Church. Bert enjoyed sewing and was involved in the American Sewing Guild and the Macon Sewing Guild. He was a Scoutmaster for many years with Troop 19 and Troop 140. He was also a Mason.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Elibba Norris Jacobs. Survivors include his children, Amanda Jacobs Stearns (Doug) of Seattle, WA, Jennifer Jacobs Peth (David) of Macon, Robert S. Jacobs (Carrie) of Springfield, IL, John H. Jacobs (Dawn) of Cochran, GA; grandchildren, Sarah, Emma, Maggie and Seth Jacobs, T. J.
