Augustus “Gus” Milton Parker, 93, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2020. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Jimmy Asbell and the Rev. John Irwin officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. to service time at the church. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Ave., Macon GA 31204 or the Methodist Children’s Home, 304 Pierce Ave., Macon GA 31204.
Gus was born in Rocky Ford, GA to the late Thomas Parker Sr., and Jewell Roberts Parker. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Thomas Parker and Ace Parker.
He was a graduate of Lanier High School for Boys, attended Davidson College, North Georgia College, Mercer University and received a Masters of Education from Mercer University and a specialty of Education Degree from Georgia State. He began teaching in 1948 at Lanier Jr. High School and in 1953 moved to Lanier Sr. High where he was the Business Manager for the Athletic Department. Gus worked in the Board of Education Central Office as Assistant Comptroller and retired from the Board of Education as Assistant Purchasing Agent 1987. He returned to part-time status at the Board and retired a second time in 1993.
He joined the Exchange Club of Macon in 1965, President of Club 1987-1988, National President of the Exchange Club 2002-2003 and was on the National Board and Regional Board 2005 and he also served on the District Board, and served as District President and Regional Board President.
Gus was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church and the Allen Sanders Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Nedra “Dee” Jones Parker of Macon, children, Jennifer Parker of Henderson, NC, Boyd (Joanne) Parker of DeForest, WI, Timothy Parker of Macon, GA Benjamin Parker of Augusta, GA, grandchildren, Sarah Tinsley Parker of Macon, Timothy A. (Wallace) Parker, Jr. of Charleston SC, Tommy Parker of Bend, OR, Joe (Jen) Parker of DeForest, WI and Adam Parker of Minneapolis, MN, two great grandchildren, Rhett and Wyatt Parker, step-children, Jeff Penland and Debbie Isbell and daughter-in-law, Charlene Penland, and several nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Cecile Parker of Milledgeville, GA.
