

Carl James Welton, 90, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 1 at 12:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Vernon Knight officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, January 31 at 6:30 PM at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. The family will receive friends following the Rosary. The family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 830 Poplar St., Macon 31201.
Carl was born in Mattoon, Illinois to the late Clarence and Elizabeth Welton. He entered the Navy immediately following graduation from Mattoon High School and spent two years as a sonar man on destroyer escorts serving in Italy and China. Carl graduated from Eastern Illinois State Teachers College in 1950. He met his wife, the former Florence Crockett in college and they married in 1948.
After graduation, Carl taught school in Augusta, Missouri for two years and was in his second year of teaching in Robinson, Illinois when he had the opportunity to become an FBI Agent. He served in Albany, NY for two years, in Atlanta for six years and in Macon until 1980 when he retired as Senior Resident Agent. Carl spent ten years doing investigative work for various government agencies after his retirement.
Carl loved his family, his church, watching sports on TV, working in his yard, attending grandchildren’s sport games. He was an avid bowler and golfer and a member of the Dixie Senior Golf Association.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Florence Crockett Welton; children, Colleen (Gary) Dunagan of Macon, Kathy (Jack) Grant of Gray, Dan (Linda) Welton of Forsyth, Steve (Jo Alice) Welton of Lawrenceville, and Patty Welton of Macon; eight grandchildren, Amy (Mark) Holmes, Beth (Chuck) Baldwin, Sharon (Jack) Oliver, Andrew (Kathy) Dunagan, Keith (Amanda) Welton, Jenny (Greg) Jones, Stephanie (Ricky) Williams, Patrick Welton; and fifteen great-grandchildren; brother, Duane (Nan) Welton of Mattoon, Illinois; nephews, nieces, cousins, brother-in-law, Ken (Doris) Crockett of Austin, Texas.
