

MACON – Gloria Harrison Byars, 77, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011 at a local hospital. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday at Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church with burial in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Jay Harris will officiate. The family will meet friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Saturday in the gathering area of the Christian Life Center, Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Heartland Hospice, 200 Northside Crossing, Macon 31210 or to Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church, 500 Bass Road, Macon 31210.
Mrs. Byars, daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Harrison and Eula Daniel Harrison, was born in Wrightsville. She had lived in Macon most of her life and was a graduate of A. L. Miller High School. Mrs. Byars was a member of Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church for fifty-six years and was the founder of the Nursery Department and Mother’s Morning Out program of the church and served as Director of Nursery Services. She was a member of the Howard Community Club, Monroe County Historical Club and the Georgia National Guard Auxiliary. Mrs. Byars also worked as a substitute teacher at Tattnall Square Academy.
Mrs. Byars is survived by her family whom she adored, her husband, Rodney Byars of Macon; her daughters, Patricia Stanfield of St. Simons Island and Nancy (Ian) Kistler of Macon; her beloved grandchildren, Emma Stanfield, Cole Stanfield and Ben Trofemuk; her sister, Dian (David) Prochazka of Issaquah, WA and several nieces and nephews.
