

Harry was born in Macon to the late William Sidney Simmons and Janie Goodwin Simmons and was a lifelong Maconite. Harry was preceded in death by his older brother, Sid; Sid’s wife, Mary Ann; his aunt, Irene Goodwin; and his beloved cousin, Mark Simmons and nephew, Bill Simmons.
He was a graduate of Lanier High School, Class of 1953, and he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1957 with a degree in Business Administration. Harry was a member of the 202 Air National Guard and spent 32 years employed at Robins Air Force Base as a contract negotiator. After he retired, he went to work for the Macon Braves Baseball Club and stayed there until their last season here. His final job was with the Mercer School of Medicine, where he worked as a “designated patient.”
Harry enjoyed sports all of his life. He joined the Macon YMCA (Macon Health Club) at age 6 and went there daily until his final illness. He also played Church League and Senior Citizen softball. He participated in Golden Olympics where he won numerous gold medals.
Harry lived in the same house all his life. His sister’s children, Pete and Summer, were like his own. His great-niece, Maggie, was like a granddaughter to him.
Harry was well known for his friendly, generous, and caring nature. He was very loved by his family and friends.
Harry is survived by his sister, Jane (Paul) Wellborn, his nephew, Pete (Susan) Wellborn of Atlanta, his nieces, Summer Wellborn of Macon and Nancy Francis (Bert) Simmons of Winter Park, FL, and nephew, Harry Thomas Simmons of Asheville, NC and his great-niece, Maggie Wellborn of Atlanta; cousins, Margie (Vernon) Simmons Tanner, Patsy Key and Peggy Simmons and his beloved pets, B.P., Belue, Peanut, and Baby Girl.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 7 at 2 p.m. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street with the Rev. Crede Hinshaw officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Harry lived as Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over til it’s over.”
