

John Vell Harris, Jr. (3/19/25-10/12/17) passed away on October 12, 2017 at the age of 92. Mr. Harris was born and raised in Griffin, GA as one of nine siblings. In the tenth grade, he felt the call of duty to his country, dropped out of school, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. He trained as an aviation ordnance man and served three years active duty including two years in North Africa as a guard for ammunition and prisoners of war. After the war, he returned to his roots in Griffin, where he met his wife of 55 years, Basha Thrash Harris. They moved to Macon, GA, where they lived most of their lives except for a few years in Asheville, NC to live near their daughter and her family.
Mr. Harris is survived by his only child and her husband, Linda Harris Glasgow and Thomas W. Glasgow, Jr. of Asheville, NC and Boca Grande, FL; his only granddaughter and her husband, Kelly Glasgow Flaherty and Brian Flaherty of Atlanta, GA; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charles Harris of Experiment, GA and Mrs. Daniel Harris of Atlanta, GA; eighteen nieces and nephews, and an abundance of grand nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. He felt blessed to live a long life yet greatly missed his brothers and sisters, whom he survived for twenty years or more.
After a career in the sewing machine business, Mr. Harris retired from the the U.S. Postal Service after 25 years of service. He loved his job there and the people he met delivering mail. He and his wife were active members of Highland Hills Baptist Church and were very grateful for their ministers and friends there.
Snow’s Memorial Chapel on Cherry Street is handling arrangements. There will be a visitation there with family on Wednesday, October 18th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service in Snow’s Cherry Street Chapel. Rev. Cass Ducharme will officiate. After the memorial, there will be a private burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin, Georgia alongside his wife, infant son, parents, and sister. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highland Hills Baptist Church, 1370 Briarcliff Road, Macon, GA. 31211.
