John was born in Macon on October 29, 1946 to Cortez Douglas and James Paul Sammons and was predeceased by a brother, Paul Sammons. Johnny is survived by his sister, Letitia Sammons Clark; nephews, Jeffrey and Douglas Clark and niece, Cathryn Cohenour, and 9 great nieces and nephews. Johnny’s favorite activity was hanging out with his family, particularly when they celebrated his birthday taking him bowling.
Johnny was a very devoted member of Riverside United Methodist Church and Woodruff Sunday School Class. He volunteered in many capacities and joyfully worked every week with the Riverside Backpack Ministry shopping for food, packing, managing inventory and delivering bags to MLK, Jr. School. He never missed Wednesday night Supper, evening coming early each week to help set-up. One of Johnny’s most favorite activities was Riverside’s Drive Thru Nativity. He would helped setting up scenes and was one of the Three Wise Men each year. He was extremely proud and excited when the Woodruff Class awarded him Riverside’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
Johnny lived for 11 years at St. Paul Apartments where he was twice elected King for his volunteer services. He helped every week with kitchen duties at meal time, delivered Meals on Wheels to apartments, ran errands and helped other residents and staff as needed.
Johnny’s Celebration of Life and Visitation will be held Monday, January 20th at Riverside United Methodist Church, with Visitation at 10:00 and the Service at 11:00, with Rev. Antonie Walker officiating.
