Kathleen Peeples Ballou, age 89, passed away May 15, 2023 in Macon, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at Vineville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., with Dr. Jimmy Asbell and Dr. William Oliver officiating. There will be a visitation following the service in the sanctuary. The burial service will be private.
Kathleen was predeceased by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Taylor; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Peeples; and her sister, Mary Peeples DeVries; as well as husbands Richard Sattler, Charles Roberts Pendleton and Lawrence Dennis Ballou.
Born September 6, 1933, Kathleen attended Alexander III, AL. Miller High School, and graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia, majoring in political science. She exemplified steel magnolia – charming with great fortitude. Ever the lady, when offered an early afternoon libation, she would decline saying, “no thank you, I wait until 5:00 and give it my all.” She was fun-loving and a fan of travel, but her favorite was Normandy because of her patriotism. Her laugh was contagious, and she was quite often outrageously funny. Kathleen always wanted the best for her daughters, and had a deep love and appreciation for family, Southern traditions, and creating beautiful spaces and gardens.
Kathleen greatly admired her grandparents, Mr. R.J. Taylor and Kathleen Dewitt Taylor, who were for many years contributing citizens of Macon. Because of his generosity and interest in education, Mr. Taylor championed the preservation of Wesleyan College and Taylor Hall was named for his dedication. He gave the city of Hawkinsville the Taylor Memorial Hospital in memory of his father and grandfather, both of whom were doctors. Kathleen’s grandmother and namesake provided and arranged flowers for 50 years at Vineville Methodist Church.
After living for 16 years in St. Louis, MO, Kathleen returned to Macon and worked for Marshall Realty. She was a member of Vineville Methodist Church, the Junior League of Macon and St. Louis, Town and Country Garden Club, Idle Hour Country Club, the National Society of Colonial Dames, and the Macon Duplicate Bridge Club. An avid bridge player, Kathleen achieved Ruby Life Master. For several years, she was Chairman of the Cannonball House, and later joined the Friends of the Cannonball House. She was very active in the Republican Party and attended several state delegate meetings.
Kathleen is survived by her two daughters, Katie McDonough (Robert) and Polly Sattler. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mary Kate Stockwell (Pete), and Jeffrey Bell (Lauren), and by four great-grandchildren: Lyla Bell Stockwell, Oliver Jennings Stockwell, Noah Christopher Bell, and Hudson Taylor Bell, friends, extended family and cousins.
Her stepchildren are Elaine Pendleton Howe, Anita Pendleton Ostrander, Lisa Ballou Gibbs, Robert Cooper Ballou, Richard Hamilton Ballou, David Hughes Ballou, and Kathryn Ann Ballou Breedlove.
Special thanks to Kyle Lemons and all of the staff at Carlyle Place for the loving care given to our mother.
For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Wesley Glen Ministries, 4580 N Mumford Rd, Macon, GA 31210, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
