Mrs. John B. Harris, Jr., age 95, of Macon died on September 22, 2015. She was born Julia Marie Doss in College Park, GA on February 10, 1920, and was the daughter of Dr. Noble Camp Doss and Echo Annette Corless Doss of Atlanta, Georgia.
She enjoyed painting and art her entire life. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts where she studied under Lamar Dodd for which the UGA School of Art is named, she lived in New York City working as a commercial artist until becoming an airline stewardess for American Airlines. Her flights allowed her to be on the west coast closer to her fiancé and future husband of 53 years, Naval Lieutenant John B. Harris, Jr., while he was serving in the Pacific during World War II. They were married November 26, 1945, in San Francisco, CA, but lived in Macon, GA throughout their married life.
She was a member of Mulberry Methodist Church, the Junior League of Macon, Town and Country Garden Club, the Nathaniel Macon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Phi Mu Sorority, and a member of Idle Hour Country Club.
Her great joys in life were as a wife, mother, and grandparent, painting and gardening. In her later years she thrived on the goodness of her neighbors and particularly enjoyed the children who frequently congregated in her front yard and made themselves at home in her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Burke Harris, Jr., two sisters, Virginia Moore and Geraldine Dunson House, and a brother, Noble Camp Doss. She is survived by her three sons, Nathaniel E. Harris (Tina), John Burke Harris, III (Joan), William C. Harris (Sarah), four grandchildren, Nathaniel E. Harris, Jr. (Sharie), Stephen H. Harris, Noble B. Harris, Katherine Marie Harris, step grandson, R. Christian Wooley, and two great grandchildren, Emerson Harris and Oliver Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, September 26, at 11:00 AM, graveside at Riverside Cemetery, North Gate, with the Rev. Jimmy Towson officiating. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be made to Macon Outreach or the Federated Garden Club of Macon.
