He was born on April 10, 1947, in Hollywood, California, to the late Irvin and Lillian Gottlieb. After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1965, he attended the University of Colorado and graduated from Weber State in Utah. He was drafted to the NFL Dallas Cowboys in the 10th round and participated on the taxi squad there and with the Washington Redskins; he ended his pro football career with the Canadian league the Edmonton Eskimos (now known as the Edmonton Elks).
After leaving the Eskimos he began his career as a counselor and house parent in group homes in California. His passion was coaching football where he had numerous seasons on both the college and high school level. While coaching at Faith Baptist Christian School in Canoga Park, California, he met an elementary school teacher and cheerleading coach, Robin and married her. They moved to Georgia and had their two sons, Nolan and Tyler.
Stuart retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections as a Behavioral Counselor, coaching on the side all the while. HIs favorite coaching experiences were with his own sons in Rec league football, basketball, and baseball.
He loved God and his family and was a member of Ingleside Avenue Baptist Church for 24 years. Stuart and Robin were married for 44 years.
Stuart is survived by his wife, Robin Logan Gottlieb; his sons Nolan (daughter-in-law Maggie) and Tyler Gottlieb and grandson, Benaiah Gottlieb; brother-in-law Phil Logan, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Irvin and Lilian Gottlieb and his brother Alvin Gottlieb.
Funeral services will be at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Bass Road, Sunday, September 28, 2025, 3:00 pm. with the Rev. Eric Freel and sons, Nolan and Tyler Gottlieb officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Covenant Academy, 4652 Ayers Road, Macon 31210.
