A longtime resident of Macon/Bibb County, Mr. Lovett was born to the late Willie and Alice Lovett and was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Willis Lovett and son, Thomas C. Lovett. He is survived by his children, Kay Holmes (Hal), Tuscaloosa, AL; Ted Lovett (Julie), Springfield, VA; Todd Lovett (Marianne), Kennesaw, GA; brother, James “Hamp” (Wendell) Lovett, sister-in-law, Edith “Toots” Smith; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild.
He attended Lanier High School of Macon. He played baseball and football receiving several scholarship offers from various schools.
Mr. Lovett joined the United States Army in 1950 and was stationed in Germany where he played on the Army’s baseball and football teams. He was selected All European Football quarterback.
Following his military service, in 1952 Mr. Lovett played quarterback for Middle Georgia College prior to signing to play baseball with the Class A Macon Peaches (Cubs Farm League) in 1953 as a third baseman.
Willie was an avid golfer playing until the age of 92 and even practiced his short game chipping the day before he passed away.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He passed his love of sports on to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them play and was quick to discuss the games of baseball, football, or golf with his family and their friends. He also enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Georgia Bulldogs.
Mr. Lovett endeared himself to others and seldom met a stranger. He retired at 65 after many years as General Sales Manager of Jackson Oldsmobile.
Prior to moving to Tuscaloosa, AL, Mr. Lovett especially enjoyed his weekly meeting with The Macon Lions Club. He was a member for over fifty years having served as president and attaining “Lion of the Year” several times.
Willie’s great sense of humor and his love for conversation, sports, dancing, and country music will be greatly missed.
