Dominic B. (“Bud”) Griffin Jr. died on June 12, 2014 at his home in Madison, CT at the age of 100. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Dominic B. Griffin Sr. and Elizabeth Kelly Griffin and grew up in Brooklyn and Garden City, NY, where he lived for many years. As a boy on May 20, 1927 he was at Roosevelt Field to see Charles Lindbergh take off in the Spirit of St. Louis on his successful trans-Atlantic flight to Paris. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1937 he worked for Cunard White Star Line traveling from New York to Europe and the Caribbean. He later commenced a long-term association with the Gulf Oil Corporation - interrupted by work at Grumman Aircraft during World War II - retiring as President of the Gulf subsidiary T.A.D. Jones Company, New Haven in 1979.
In 1940 he married Margaret L. Robinson of Boston, MA who predeceased him in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, the former Jane Hutchinson Munkenbeck, a son Dominic B. Griffin III (Mary) of New York, NY and Honolulu, HI; a daughter Ann G. Selinger (John R.) of Washington, DC and Dunstable, MA; four grandchildren, Dominic B. Griffin IV (Tara Mrowka) of Brooklyn, NY; Tara A. Montague (M. Gavan) of Washington, DC; Amy R. Selinger (Mark B. Elefante) of Lexington, MA; John R. Selinger Jr. (Annika) of Dunstable, MA; and six great grandchildren.
Long an active supporter of community service organizations, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Garden City. In 1983 he was among the organizers of the Deacon John Grave Foundation, incorporated to preserve the Deacon John Grave House in Madison CT. He was a member of the Garden City Golf Club, the Madison Country Club, the Madison Winter Club, the Madison Lawn Bowling Club and the Madison Beach Club.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret Church in Madison, CT on June 18 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, NY at 12 Noon on June 19.
