Skutel, John M., On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, John Matthew Skutel, longtime resident of Fairfield, Connecticut, passed away in Madison, CT. John was born on March 15, 1924 in Bridgeport, son of the late Stephen and Eva Zamecanik Skutel. Predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years Yevette (Lambert), John was the father of four beloved children: John, Jr. and his wife Mary Berney of North Hero, VT; Stephen and his wife Eleanor of Sterling, MA; Susan Gunther of Winsted, CT and Francine Detmer and her husband Edward of Madison, CT. He was the proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
John was a proud World War II veteran having served in the 12th Marines, Third Marine Division from March 1943 to December 1945. A Field Lineman and Switchboard Operator, John served with the marines on Guam, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. After his discharge from service, he married the love of his life, Yvette, in 1946. John was a certified watchmaker and was employed at Perkin-Elmer but his passion was antique books and collecting. For more than 30 years, Connecticut Book Auction Gallery held popular book auctions in the Fairfield County area. Through his collecting, John was a contributor to several books including ones about P.T. Barnum, Connecticut duck decoys and The Old Pot Shop Pottery.
Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Avenue, Southport, CT 06890.
