Bert Hall Jr. 62, husband of Cheryl (Hathaway) Hall, of Killingworth CT and Sharpsburg GA passed away unexpectedly at his house in Killingworth Saturday evening. Bert was born January 18, 1959 in Middletown CT to the late Esther and Robert Hall Sr of Madison CT. He graduated from Vinal Tech in 1977.
The Hall family was an institution in Madison, with Bert’s grandmother delivering newspapers in a horse and buggy and his dad owning the only tire shop in town for many years. It was at his dad’s shop that Bert discovered his love of cars. After he took over the family business he built and sold so many classic cars; everything from T-buckets, to the ZZ Top style, and his beloved Bel Airs.
Robert Hall and Son’s Garage in Madison was where Bert and his sisters grew up, and it is also where his and Cheryl’s children grew up as well. The garage was a place where all were welcome, Bert mentored countless people, giving freely of his knowledge, time, and resources.
Bert met the Arents family through Mike Porto and helped them build/restore/keep running at LEAST 8 cars. Bert, Cheryl and the Arents’ shared many a meal together, though he would still only eat a select few vegetables despite their best efforts! Three of those cars are still on the road, a ’69 C-10, a ’76 Nova, and Molly a ’65 Mustang.
While Bert could look imposing when needed, he was a teddy bear at heart. He enjoyed going to cruise nights, car shows, and especially the swap meets, the one in Carlisle, PA being a favorite. He was always up for an adventure, as long as someone else was driving. It didn’t really matter where he was going, as long as there was ice cream at the end, he was up for anything.
He liked to spend the cold New England winters in Georgia, but liked to spend the hot Georgia summers in Connecticut where he worked as a mechanic at Hammonasset State Park. He was a quiet, gentle soul that will be greatly missed by all those that knew him.
In addition to his wife Cheryl, Bert is survived and will be missed by their children: Rob Hall of Killingworth CT, Jessica Hall of Sharpsburg GA, Cristy Bailey of Sharpsburg GA, and Tina Phelan (Mike) of Madison CT. His 9 Grandchildren: Robert, Kaden, Chase, Skyler, Madison, Mariella, Junior, Danielle and Julius. His sisters Sue Clark (James) of Coventry CT, Jean Ann Hall of Haddam, Betty Oslander of Madison, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be at Swan's Funeral Home on Sunday 11am-2pm in Madison. Burial will be private.
