Lillian Blanche Gilles, age 94, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026. She was born in July 1931, in the Bronx borough of New York City. She graduated from Evander Childs High School of the Bronx, and attended classes at NYU. Lillian met her future husband and lifelong partner, William Gilles, on a blind date in NYC, and subsequently married in Detroit, Michigan. Husband “Bill” then took an Optometry position in Grand Rapids, MI, where they initially settled following his graduation from Optometry School. They then moved to Bay City, where their three children were born before moving to Bloomfield Hills. Soon after Bill retired from his long career in the Detroit area as an Optometrist, they relocated to Boynton Beach, FL to spend their retirement days. Several years later, after Bill passed she returned to Michigan to be close to immediate family in the area for the remainder of her life.
Lillian was the loving daughter of Frances and Robert Lane, who emigrated to the United States from Hungary in the 1920s. She had two sisters, Peggy and Sally, who later moved to South Florida before passing. Lillian was a huge animal lover- especially cats! At one point, she had four cats. Lillian had a strong love of family. She lived a long, full life marked by strength, curiosity, and deep devotion to her family.
Lillian was preceded in death in 2005 by her beloved husband of 53 years, William Gilles. Together, they built a life centered on family, resilience, and shared values. She is survived by her loving children: Sue Kantor (Seth) in Bexley, OH, Herb Gilles (Annie) in Dallas, TX and Andrea Briggs (Walter) in Beverly Hills, MI. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Jacqueline Gilles (Fermin), Walter Briggs V (Chloe), Aaron Briggs (Sonia), and Willy Briggs (Bri), and cherished her great-grandson, Amaury.
Lillian will long be remembered for her inquisitive mind and lifelong love of reading. She kept up faithfully with current events and politics, and could be counted on to share her opinions on important issues of the day. Determined and strong-willed, she approached life with a focus that those who loved her often described, affectionately, as stubborn. She took great pride in her appearance and carried herself with dignity and care throughout her life. Lillian enjoyed traditional Hungarian stuffed cabbage rolls and had a special fondness for chocolate cookies and cake.
Above all, Lillian will be remembered for her unwavering dedication, being a listening ear and counsel to family members, her sharp mind, and enduring spirit. She leaves behind a family legacy of strength, independence, and love that will continue to live on through all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial donation to Michigan Humane in honor of Lillian Gilles. Gifts can be made at www.michiganhumane.org. Thank you for remembering her with your kindness.
