Alice Owen Austin

Alice Virginia Owen Austin, 95, of Monroe, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 14, 2012, at the home of her daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, of 66 years, Charles Wesley Austin.

Born January 19, 1917, in Bedford Co., she was one of 10 children, of the late Ernest C. Owen, and Hattie Arthur Owen. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, W.L. Bailey III.

Alice was a lifelong homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Dedicated to her family, she always had time to listen, hug, kiss, and encourage you.

She was a wonderful cook, read her bible daily, and was witness to others. She was a faithful giver to The Old Time Gospel Hour, and Faith Partners. She was a member of North Bedford Baptist Church and later Temple Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Alice A. Bailey, of Monroe; a brother, Melvin Owen and wife Trudy, of Callaway, VA; two grandchildren, Deborah Bailey Young and husband Jim, of Monroe, and Walter L. Bailey VI, of Monroe; 7 great-grandchildren, Kevin B. Young and wife Hollie, of Roanoke, Michelle Y. Payne and husband Wesley, of Monroe, Courtney E. Young, Blake A. Bailey, Walter L. Bailey V “Boo”, Aaron W. Bailey, and Autumn B. Bailey, all of Monroe; 4 great-great-grandchildren, Kylie E. Young, and Maggie G. Young, both of Roanoke, Eliza C. Payne, and Cassidye A. Bailey, both of Monroe, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family would like to make a special mention to her wonderful caregivers, the late Doris Haynes Mosby, and Patricia Howlett.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012, at Centenary Cemetery.
