Calvin was raised in Forest, VA by his mother and grandparents and also in Lynchburg by his father and step-mother. As a young man Calvin was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, competing in many motorcycle races and enjoying countless road trips with friends. A Korean War veteran, Calvin served his country in the Army from1953 until1955.
Upon returning home from Korea, Calvin married his sweetheart Joyce (Coffey) Mason on December 23, 1955. In addition to his full time job at the Central Virginia Training Center, Calvin, with the help of his wife Joyce, operated a photography business out of their home. His unique way with people and his photography skills allowed him to capture the treasured memories of countless families in central Virginia and beyond.
After retiring from the photography business Calvin used much of his spare time to serve others. His activities included things such as watching after elderly neighbors, delivering meals on wheels and visiting people through the Mended Hearts program at Lynchburg General Hospital. Calvin was an active member of the Sandy Bottom Christian Church where he served as deacon and elder for 20 years.
While Calvin loved his entire extended family, he was an especially devoted husband, father and grandfather. Overcoming hardships as a young man, he led by example and made every effort to leave things better for the next generation.
Above all, Calvin was a man of faith who put his complete trust in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He closed his eyes on this world with the full assurance of better things to come.
Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce Coffey Mason, his son David (Linda) Mason and granddaughter Makenna, all of Heath, OH, three sisters, Linda (Robert) Crowder of Dunnsville, Carolyn Doss, and Wanda Woody of Madison Heights, stepmother, Madeline Cash, her son Billy Cash and several nieces and nephews.
