

Born July 9, 1947, in Cadiz, KY, he was a son of the late Julian Clyde Sumner Jr. and Eulala Williams Sumner. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl Lynn Ahart, son-in-law, Doug Baldock Jr.; and best-friend, Melvin “Butch” Taylor.
Mr. Sumner was a United States Navy veteran, and served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, CVA 42. He was retired from Buffalo Air Handling. Gary was a sports fan and enjoyed NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was his favorite, the WWE, the University of Kentucky Wildcats, camping, and deep-sea fishing. He enjoyed sitting on his porch swing, tending to his livestock (birds, squirrels, and rabbits). His Facebook status updates will be greatly missed.
Survivors also include three daughters, Shannon Epperson and husband Andy, of Rustburg, Jennifer Moore and husband Charles, of Lynchburg, and Lisa Baldock, of Madison Heights; two brothers, Carl Ray Sumner and wife Janice, and Darrell Sumner, both of Cadiz; 7 grandchildren, Jared Lane Sumner, of Amherst, Hillary Dawn Taylor, of Rustburg, Courtney Grace Baldock, of Madison Heights, Michael Hunter Taylor, of Havelock, NC, Kathryn Lane Baldock, of Madison Heights, Douglas Cole Baldock, of Madison Heights, and Anthony “Tony” Carroll Epperson Jr., of Rustburg; one great-grandson, Dustin Joseph Seufert Jr., of Rustburg, and a whole mess of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, in-laws, outlaws, and many friends; as well as “Coletrane”, a handsome basset hound.
The family will receive friends Saturday, May 25, 2013, from 6-8:00 pm at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm at the funeral home on Sunday, May 26, 2013. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Wounded Warrior Project, or to the American Cancer Society.
