George Lynwood Craig Jr.

George Lynwood Craig Jr., 76, of Amherst, passed away January 29, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ellen Ogden Craig. Born August 27, 1936, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late George Lynwood Craig Sr., and Louise Womack Craig. George was educated in the Lynchburg Public School system and completed his education in the USAF, from which he received an Honorable medical discharge. He was a life-long professional salesman with many interests. Along with running a restaurant, he was a past member of the Brookville–Timberlake Lions Club, BPO Elks Club in Lynchburg, and past governor of the Madison Heights Moose Lodge. George was a licensed American Horse Show judge, and was the master of ceremonies for many horse shows. As a hunter, he enjoyed the hunt as much as the “hunting stories”. His love of his Black Angus Cattle and farm was evidenced in his later life. He was a member of the American Angus Assoc., the American Gelbvieh Assoc., Virginia Cattleman’s Assoc., and past-president and director of the Nelson Amherst Beef Producers Assoc., Inc., which he helped develop. He served his county well as a member of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Leadership Council, Amherst County Board of Assessors, Amherst County Planning Commission, and as Amherst County’s elected representative of the Farm Service Agency. Survivors also include his son, George L. Craig III, of Amherst; his daughter, Lynn Lee Craig, of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Emilyann Louise Craig (Papa’s best girl); devoted and great friend, Paul P. Keller, Lt. Commander, retired, USN, of Newport News, VA; a niece and nephew, cousins, other relatives, and friends. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm, Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, at Fort Hill Memorial Park, by Pastor Carol Martin Jr., of Kingswood Baptist Church.
