Obituary of Rebecca Wright Jones
Rebecca “Becky” Wright Jones, age 81, of Amherst went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 13, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents George M. Wright and Louise Campbell Wright. Becky’s greatest joy was found within her family. A loving wife and mother, her heart was most radiant in the presence of her husband of 62 years, William Rowland Jones Jr., children, Dawne Haag (E. Keller) of Amherst, and Dr. William R Jones III of Lyndhurst, Virginia, grandchildren, Morgan and Kelsey Haag (Will), Anna and William Jones IV and great granddaughter, Kenna Hamlett. She is also survived by her sister, Eleanor McCormick of Georgetown, KY. Born in Lynchburg on July 6, 1942, Becky was a lifetime member of Amherst Baptist Church where she was baptized at the age of 12. She served on several committees, was a deacon, trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the choir. She graduated from Lynchburg College with a degree in Elementary Education and received her Masters degree from the University of Virginia as a reading specialist when she was 50 years old. Becky taught first grade for almost 30 years at Central Elementary School in Amherst. Her dedication to her students went beyond the classroom, instilling in them a love for learning that lasted a lifetime. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators and a faithful volunteer. Some of the organizations benefiting from her time were Amherst Cares, Meals on Wheels, and Friends of Amherst County Public Library. In her spare time, Becky loved having lunch with friends to celebrate birthdays, reading a good book and relaxing on the beach. A memorial service celebrating Becky’s life will be held at the Whitten Monelison Chapel in Madison Heights on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 3 pm. A one hour prior visitation for family and friends will be held at 2 pm. Rev. Nancy Johnson will be officiating. Memorial contributions in Becky’s memory may be made to Amherst Cares, PO Box 451, Amherst Virginia 24521 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family expresses sincere appreciation for all acts of kindness and concern extended to them during their hours of bereavement. May God bless each of you. Though she may have departed this world, her spirit of kindness, generosity, and love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
