David was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Evelyn Cole, and his beloved granddaughter, Ashton Marie Perdue. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his wife of 46 years, Marie Cole, his brother Richard (Mary Jane) Cole, sister Sandra (Leonard) Martin, his children, Kimberly Francis, Stephanie (Ronnie) Rasp, Don (Kelly) Kinder, and Monica (John) Mawyer; and his cherished grandchildren, Joseph, Kaleb, Jonathon, Hunter, Hannah, Madison, Lauryn, Chloe, Meredith, and Klaire. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Rowan, Lia, Kash, Ash, and Emery, who brought him immense joy.
Dave grew up throughout southern West Virginia, spending 15 years in Shady Spring, later living in Ceredo-Kenova, before his family ultimately settled in Elkview. He graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1969 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from WV Institute of Technology. While at Tech, David played tennis all four years and was a member of the JV basketball team during his freshman year.
David enjoyed a long and meaningful career as a civil and structural engineer. Early on, he worked with the West Virginia Department of Highways on the I-77 project through Charleston. Most of his career was spent as a Professional Structural Engineer serving chemical plants in and around Charleston and Parkersburg. He concluded his professional journey with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
A man of deep and unwavering faith, David’s life was guided by his trust in Jesus Christ. He was actively involved in the churches he attended, including Mahone Chapel and Morris Memorial, faithfully serving in many roles over the years. He also proudly served with the Gideons, finding great purpose in sharing God’s Word and knowing he was helping spread the Gospel around the world.
Outside of work and church, David was known for his loyalty, his quiet strength, and his passions, especially his love for West Virginia University athletics. He was, without question, the biggest WVU Mountaineers fan, cheering on the Mountaineers with pride, enthusiasm, and a lifetime of devotion to the old gold and blue.
A Celebration of Life for David will be held at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, on Saturday, January 31, 2026, and Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Richard Justice and Pastor Don Kinder are officiating.
