

In the early morning hours of Saturday, November 5, 2016, our beloved Dad, Marshall A. “Shorty” Mullens, 87 years of age of Campbells Creek, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the home of his eldest son, Michael. Dad was ready to be reunited with his loving wife of 60 years, Sylvia, and dance away on the streets of gold in heaven.
Dad was truly our best friend and hero and friend to many, many people. In addition to his wife, Dad was predeceased by his parents, George and Lola Vannatter Mullens; precious grandson, Ryan Mullens; mother-in-law, Irene Skeens; sister, Marcelline Rhodes; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Spencer.
Dad is survived by his seven children, son, Mike and Kathy Mullens; daughter, Amy Campbell and fiancée, Keith Paxton; son, Mitchell Mullens; daughters, Julie Lawson and companion, Andy Grimm, Becky and Scott Combs, Laura and Ben Beard and Tina and Bill Manley; 14 grandchildren, Traci (Chuck) McVey, Amber ( John) Simon, Michelle, Chris, and Brandon (Rachel) Campbell , Matthew (Tasha) and Caleb Mullens, Ronnie (Jackie) Bostic, Amanda (Chris) Hanshaw, Lindsey Thaxton-Combs, Cameron Combs and Logan, Adam, and Tristan Manley; 13 great-grandchildren, Charlie and Haley McVey, Gage and Grey Simon, Allyson White-Campbell and Amy Marshall-Campbell, Evelyn, Alexis and Carson Mullens, Vince and Brayden Bostic, and Arianna and Chris, Jr., Hanshaw; and one great-great-grandson due in December.
Also surviving Dad is his sister-in-law, Connie King Tedrow; sister, Glenda Whitmore Stone; special friend, Drema Bartley; dog, Blackie and cats, Pete, Sissy, and Stray; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Dad worked for Smith Transfer/Bell Lines for 32 years as a diesel mechanic. He served two campaigns in the Korean War receiving three bronze stars and declining a purple heart because he felt others deserved it more.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016, at Stevens and Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with Pastor Raymond Cobb officiating. The entombment with Military Rites will follow the service at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Family and friends will gather for the visitation from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
