Robert Gill Heasley II

Gill is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret, passing just one day shy of their 35th anniversary. Though he had no biological children, Marg’s children became his own: Son, Michael Herald

(Alicia) and daughter, ReBecca Herald Sizemore (Chris). He was a proud grandfather to Trentan Sizemore, Samual Herald (Megan), Grant Sizemore, and Brooke Herald, and great-grandfather to Elliott and Arlo Herald. Gill had two amazing nieces, Lori Beth Kerns and Kelly Kerns (deceased).

Gill graduated from Stonewall Jackson High in 1969. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University and a master’s degree from West Virginia University.

Following graduation, Gill began his career as Sports Information Director and Coach at West Virginia State University. His coaching journey continued at Fairmont State University, Concord University, and the University of Central Florida before returning to West Virginia State University as head Women’s Basketball Coach. Even after retirement from WVSU, Gill continued doing what he loved-coaching. He worked with several Kanawha County schools, including South Charleston High School, Capital High School, Riverside High School, Nitro High School, DuPont Middle School, Horace Mann Middle School, South Charleston Middle School, Roosevelt Middle School, and Cedar Grove Middle School. He also coached WV Spirit women’s basketball and softball at Morris Memorial United Methodist Church.

Gill had the unique joy of coaching Mike and Becky, and later Brooke. He loved every child he coached, both on and off the court. He believed strongly that education came first and that being part of his team helped prepare young people for life.

Gill served as a Special Educator with Kanawha County Schools for 28 years. He built trust with his students through mutual respect and kindness while always holding them to high expectations.

Gill never met a stranger and was known for his humor, often calling those he cared about “buckethead.” He loved traveling and being on the go, always happiest when surrounded by people. His beloved dog, Lucy, was a constant companion and faithfully stayed by his side, even in his final days.

Gill was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in 2022. This journey was made easier through the love and support of family and friends. A heartfelt thank you is extended to Beverly Rice, who provided compassionate care in the months leading up to his passing.

Gill was a faithful member of Belle Church of the Nazarene and treasured his church family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Belle Nazarene Youth Group (Attention: Scott Morris, 306 E 9th St, Belle, WV 25015). Gill’s life was centered on mentoring young people and leading them toward a relationship with Christ. He loved his Lord, loved his family deeply, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Gill’s life will be at 1:00 pm Saturday April 25, 2026, at Belle Church of the Nazarene officiated by Mike Herald and Pastors Matt Chapman and David Clark. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with the service immediately following. A private family entombment will take place at Tyler Mountain Memorial Garden, Cross Lanes.

If he were here, he would simply say, “Thank you for loving me.”
