Diana Rupprecht, 89, of Barnegat, New Jersey, passed away on August 30, 2018. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 47 years, Leslie, and by her parents, Albert and Mary (Garrels) Magill. Surviving are her beloved children Rosemary Costello, Catherine (David) Lamoureaux, Stephen (Carroll Conquest) Rupprecht, and Thomas (Jeanne) Rupprecht, and three cherished grandsons, Patrick Lamoureaux, Daniel (Hannah Hiller) Lamoureaux, and John Costello.
Born in Ames, Iowa, Diana graduated from Ames High School in 1946 with scholastic honors that included a four-year scholarship awarded in a nationwide academic competition sponsored by the Pepsi-Cola Company. She then attended Grinnell College, where she earned a B.A. in French and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1950, Diana was awarded the Lydia C. Roberts Fellowship to Columbia University in New York City, where she earned a Master’s in Library Science. Following graduation, Diana worked in a special training program at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., and later moved to East Orange, New Jersey, where she was employed at East Orange Public Library as Supervisor of Technical Services for 22 years.
Diana was a member of the New Jersey Library Association and Silver Liners of Barnegat, and a member and past president of Friends of Barnegat Library. She especially enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, and traveling to historic sites, particularly those with lighthouses. Diana will always be remembered for her devotion to family and friends, her strong Catholic faith, her generous support of worthy causes, her superb organizing skills, and her scrumptious Scotch shortbread cookies.
Visitation will be at the Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manahawkin, on Tuesday, September 4th from 3 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Barnegat, on Wednesday, September 5th at 11 a.m., followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manahawkin.
