Born in Newark, he resided in Middletown for 48 years before settling in Manahawkin.
Prior to retiring, he worked for Asplundh Tree Expert Company, for 48 years. A veteran of the US Army, John honorably served our country during the Korean War from 1953-1955. John loved vacationing with his family, specifically going on cruises, enjoying the beach at LBI and Disney World. He also loved gardening, playing cards and games, and spending time in Atlantic City. More than anything, he loved spending time with his beloved wife and family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Aaron and Marie Van Sickle; and his sisters: Marie Lynch, Evelyn Oakes, and Doris Burke.
Surviving are his loving wife of 68 years, Catherine Van Sickle; his children: Cynthia Katyl and her husband William, Karen Numann and her husband Thomas, Loretta Van Sickle, Kathleen McEvoy and her husband James, and Patricia Kirch and her husband Richard; 13 grandchildren: Aaron (Natalie), Matthew (Heather), Christopher (Leah), Kimberly (Justin), Jessica (Shaun), John, Gregory (Katie), Andrew, Kyle, Daniel, Stephen (Shannon), Jason, and Nicholas; seven great-grandchildren: Avery, Declan, Zoey, Nathan, Lucas, Zachary, and Brayden; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 from 4-8 PM at the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Road, Manahawkin, NJ.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Pines, Manahawkin. Interment will immediately follow at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown.
