Obituary of Robert Louis Bruns
On Monday, May 9th, Robert L. Bruns Sr., loving husband and devoted father of 3 children, passed away. He was 92. Robert was born on October 3, 1929, in Staten Island, NY to John and Violet (Braunwarth) Bruns. Robert was an excellent student, graduating from Curtis High School in Staten Island and furthering his education at Cornell University, receiving a B.A in Chemistry in 1951. Upon graduation he was also commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, USAR, through the Army ROTC program. As the Korean Conflict was well underway, Robert was sent to Korea where he served as an officer in the 538th Ordnance Company. He returned home 18 months later and married Janet Theresa Slattery on September 12th 1954. They had 3 children, Robert Jr., Susan, and David. After military service, Robert started his professional career as a chemist. Over time, he moved into quality management and ended his career as Director of Quality for Lehn & Fink Inc. He retired at 63. Post retirement, Robert and Janet enjoyed life at the Jersey shore. They owned several properties over the years but with the exception of their last home, they were always on the water. During his lifetime Robert had many interests including sailing, boating, woodworking, photography, tennis, and investing in stocks. He was a Boy Scout and promoted scouting as a father and Boy Scout leader for many years. He loved animals, particularly cats. Robert was known for his quick wit, his attention to detail, and his eye for quality in everything he did. Robert was preceded in death by his father and mother and his loving wife Janet. He is survived by his sister, Janet, his 3 children, 5 grandchildren (Eileen, Christopher, Andrew, Benjamin, and Jacob), and a great grandchild on the way. A Catholic funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 18th, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church at 474 West Bay Avenue, Barnegat, NJ at 11 am. Visitation is at the church starting at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an organization of your choice that in some way helps animals, particularly dogs and cats. The family would like to thank Robert’s healthcare aides who lovingly cared for him in his final years. They were a special extended family to him.
