Remember the name very well and my condolences to the Kaplan family for their loss.


Mr. Kaplan was my neighbor, Scout Master, and role model.  He gave me my first job at Kaplan Cleaners along with probably dozens of Waldwick youth.  He nurtured in me my life-long love and respect for the outdoors.  He showed me what a kind, generous and principled man looked like. I know I’m a better man for having his influence in my life as a boy, and I imagine the same could be said for many other men, young and old.  I can’t imagine a better legacy than that. May his memory be a blessing.

Our sincere sympathy to you Sylvia and all of your wonderful family. We could not have said anything better than what our son Frank wrote about Bernie. I made many a sandwich for the scouts, and attended meetings with the other mothers, it was a way of life that we so enjoyed.Rudy loved scouting as much as Frank did, many thanks for sharing that dedicated man with my husband and son and a million lucky boys to have known him! Bernie was a kind, generous and gentle man.  I remember when he gave me my first job cutting his grass on Ridgewald  Ave.  He will live on in the hundreds of lives he has forever changed for the good.  Paul, Laurie and I send our condolences and have made a donation to the Boy Scouts in Bernie's Honor.

Knew Mr Kaplan as my scoutmaster and neighbor. He was a role model for me as a scout and more importantly as a boy growing up in Waldwick. Our condolences to Rich and all of the Kaplan family 

 I was a scout in Troop 308 and traveled all the way thru the ranks to Eagle.  As a young boy, I recall Mr Kaplan's raspy voice, his particularly hairy legs always with socks pulled up high, and his ability to make giant pots of cream of wheat that seemed to  serve hundreds.  Now as a middle aged man I see him more clearly.  What a powerful force he was, guiding and steering our group, our rabble of loud and busy teens and their dads.  He truly was our fearless leader.  I have fond memories of him upstate in the Catskills at our family farm on tubing retreats, many summers spent at Floodwood Mountain Reservation at scout camp, Monday night troop meeting at Crescent school in Waldwick where and he and his partner in crime, Mr. Rick Rickley, would teach us how to tie knots, sharpen knives, set up tents, among other skills.  The two of them truly guided and supported so many of us through their kindness and knowledge and skill.  I hope you find some solace in the memories you share of your dad and granddad but please know the profound impact he had on so many of us that continues to live on.  He truly helped meld me into the man I am today and I am forever grateful.  With heartfelt condolences - Frank Wildermann and my dad Rudolf Wildermann
