Doug graduated from Union High School in 1985 and Monmouth University in 1989. He was employed by Benjamin Moore for many years before opening his own "Big Frog" custom apparel shop in Belmar. After years of success with a franchise that he started from scratch, he sold it, and decided to pursue an occupation connected to his interests in aviation, joining Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall Township.
Doug loved the beach, swimming, reading, cooking, traveling, and doing DIY projects around the house. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was kind, fun loving, and his hearty, infectious laugh will be missed at future family gatherings.
Doug was predeceased by his parents Joan and Marty Hahner; his in-laws Rhoda and Charles "Babe" Zelasko; his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
He is survived by his loving husband Gary Zelasko; stepson Joey Zelasko; brother Scott Hahner and his wife Karen; and sister Gail Orlowski and her husband Gary, whom he worked with at Benjamin Moore. He also leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews Jennifer, Sean, Lauren, and Zack, who will miss him terribly, as well as his "niece dog" Daisy, a frequent houseguest.
The service celebrating Doug's life will be private. In remembrance, the family asks that charitable donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or any charity of your choice.
Peace.
