Gerald B. “Barry’ Scannell, 68, of Manchester, died June 12, 2019 at his home after a sudden illness. He was born in Manchester on May 22, 1951, the son of Gerald B. and Helyn D. (Whitmore) Scannell. He was a lifelong resident of the Queen City, was educated in the local school district and was a graduate of Manchester West High School. He also attended the University of New Hampshire.
He was employed for many years as a sales representative by the Martignetti Wine Company. Barry was a sports enthusiast cheering the loudest for all the New England teams-the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and of course, true to his Irish heritage, the Celtics. He enjoyed many a challenging round of golf at the local courses and was also a history buff who cherished the quiet times with a good book in his hand. He will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted son, brother, uncle and friend.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Members of his family include his sisters Susan Ward and her husband Rodney of Cotuit, MA and Margaret Cancel of Naples, FL, his nieces Courtenay, Brittan, Caitlin and Gabriel and his nephew Ian as well as many, many close friends.
Visitation was held on Thursday June 27 from 11 am to 1 pm at the McHugh Funeral Home 283 Hanover St. corner of Beech St. in Manchester. A Memorial Service was celebrated at 12:30 pm in the funeral home. Urn Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Barry’s name be made to Families in Transition-New Horizons for NH 199 Manchester St. Manchester, NH 03103.
