

John N. Damalas, 89, of Manchester passed away December 8, 2014 at Catholic Medical Center following a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Manchester on August 6, 1925, the son of Nicholas and Theodora (Gogou) Damalas and was a lifelong resident of the city.
John served in the Navy from 1942-46 during World War II. He joined his father and brother in operating Damalas & Sons, a market located on Chestnut St. During most of his career he was employed as a meat cutter, working for many years at Star Market and also Maple Heights Market. He retired in 1990 from Allegro Market.
A lifelong member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, he was a member of the NOA Club. John was an avid golfer and member of Derryfield Country Club and also enjoyed bowling with the NOA club and also with the YMCA Church League.
Members of the family include his wife of 59 years, Julia (Tsiorbas) Damalas of Mancheste; a son, Sturgis J. Damalas of Manchester; a daughter, Donna Finn and her husband Dana of Bedford; two granddaughters, Kayla Finn of Bedford and Monica Damalas of Manchester; two sisters, Chresoula Kounelas of Manchester and Aspasias Ballas of Keene; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Soterios Damalas.
Calling hours were on Friday from 4 to 7 pm in the McHugh Funeral Home, 283 Hanover St., corner of Beech St. The Trisaigon service was held at 6 pm in the funeral home. A funeral service was held Saturday at 10 AM in St. George Cathedral, 650 Hanover St. Burial with military honors followed in Pine Grove Cemetery.
